Product Development Engineer

We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to manage design and introduction of compostable food service products.  This position is based at our headquarters in Petaluma, California.

Product Development
  • Manages and coordinates the company’s product development in conjunction with the CEO.
  • Evaluates and resolves technical feasibility, design optimization and production issues.
  • Works with industrial designer and uses knowledge of injection molding, thermoforming, and compression molding techniques to finalize product designs for food service disposables and other compostable packaging.  
  • Ensures product designs meet requirements for aesthetics, usability, and performance.
  • Works with SVP of Sales, Regional Sales Managers and external customers to execute designs, modifications, and prototypes as per their requirements.  Responsive to re-design work and modifications based on operational testing.
  • Responsible for quoting pricing for new products based on manufacturing, material, and other costs.
  • Responsible for product lifecycle management.  Manages multiple development projects and ensures delivery on time and to quality specs.
  • Tracks/updates new sku development from conception to purchasing hand off.
    • Maintains lists of products proposed, in development, and finalized. 
    • Coordinates such lists with Marketing for photography, sell sheet and catalog creation.
    • Establishes timelines and continually monitors product development process.
    • Consistently communicates with suppliers to track design and development work-flow.
    • Tracks all custom molded special order items, mold development progress, mold prototyping, and mold billing to customers.
  • Manages roll out of new products, including:
    • Creating spec sheets for new sku’s including relevant QC standards.
    • Arranging shipping of new sku sales samples to sales reps.
    • Using space modeling software to analyze product specs and propose most efficient packaging, box sizes, pallet and truckload maximizations.
  • Supports CEO in new product development or research as needed
Product Management
  • Responsible for identifying and recommending new product initiatives and related incentives in collaboration with regional sales managers, marketing, purchasing, and head of marketing.
  • Researches and monitors existing client base and industry developments and identifies potential new product opportunities.
  • Performs competitive analysis including pricing of competitors products not stocked and business potential for stocking.
  • Crafts business cases and product plans for new product concepts or features.
Required Skills
  • Minimum 5 years experience in product design and product management.
  • Bachelor Degree in Packaging, Plastics, Industrial Design or related field.
  • Understanding of injection molding, thermoforming, compression molding processes, capabilities and design constraints.  
  • Experience with molded fiber, bioplastics, and biocomposites a plus.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and ability to develop detailed drawings a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of product development processes and project management.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Familiar with logistics and production planning concepts.
  • Broad range of computer skills—database, spreadsheet, and logistics software packages.
  • Self-directed; ability to communicate findings, make recommendations, and facilitate change.
  • Comfortable working with individuals at all organizational levels.

Mechanical Designer - Contract Position

We are looking for an excellent mechanical engineer for a freelance project involving dispensing products in the foodservice industry. The engineer would be required to review and work around existing patents to devise an elegant, low cost, usable, and easily manufactured solution. 
 
Deliverables/Tasks
  • Audit existing mechanical solutions and relevant IP protection
  • Translate customer, manufacturing, and marketing requirements into an engineered product solution
  • Develop mechanical dispensing concepts presented in 2D to 3D CAD modeling/drawings demonstrating solutions
  • Design all components using design tools that meet specific requirements of manufacturing suppliers
  • Collaborate with stakeholders on testing and ranking of actual prototypes to provide analysis 
  • Support the proposed solution with part drawings, 3D detailed assembly drawings, part specifications, and an engineering BOM
  • Additional non-essential capabilities desired in tooling and prototyping

Sustainability Manager

Functioning as part of the marketing and sales team, the Sustainability Manager will oversee the development of research, resources and consulting services for World Centric to effectively communicate to current and potential customers end of life options for compostable products in use in their businesses. The primary goal is to uphold and expand our commitment to environmental sustainability, with a focus on enabling our customers to make better sustainability decisions, using the most accurate data, testing and insights currently available. 
 
This role will also help World Centric and its customers advocate for improved end-of-life options in strategic geographical regions in the US, and ensure the most accurate sustainability information is integrated throughout World Centric’s stakeholder engagement on environmental and social issues.

Key Role Objectives
  • Support the World Centric sales team when challenging sustainability inquiries come in from the marketplace
  • Coordinate custom report offerings to trade customers covering composting, carbon footprint and waste diversion assessments
  • Monitor state, federal and international foodservice packaging regulations and trends as related to sustainability that could impact collection and hauling of World Centric products from customer sites
  • Participate in conferences, trade shows, industry groups, and other relevant events related to composting/waste diversion, including attending as a representative of World Centric and participating through proprietary content, panels and speaking engagements
  • Research (with findacomposter.com and other resources) to compile an accurate, comprehensive list of current commercial composters and their systems for processing organic waste (commercial composting, anaerobic digestion, waste-to-energy, waste-to-water, etc.) in the defined strategic markets
  • Collect information to determine each facility’s ability to compost World Centric products. Information could include:
    • On-Site Organics Processing Technologies - Define and create a list of those capable of processing BPI-certified compostable foodservice ware (this may require sending our products for testing)
      • In-Vessel
      • Anaerobic Digester
      • Waste-to-Water
  • Work with composters to facilitate acceptance of World Centric products for composting and including World Centric in any preferred compostable products lists 
  • Research local/regional/national rules and regulations which may impact collection and hauling of World Centric products from customer sites
  • Define haulers and costs for hauling products to composting facilities on an as-needed basis
  • Assess customer needs for front and back of the house communications to support proper disposal, separation and awareness of compostables (e.g. signage, videos, educational collateral, etc.)
  • Create cost benefit analysis of composting vs. landfill based on local hauling, landfill and composting costs
  • Interaction with key operators, distributors, sales reps, and other decision makers in the value chain to provide information - research, reports, recommendations - as needed
Qualifications: Requirements/Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with a company focused on sustainably-produced products that help solve social and environmental problems
  • Background in environmental services, waste management, CSR, community/government relations, issues management or a related discipline is preferred
  • Education Level: BS/BA degree in business administration, communication, public policy, environmental sciences or an advanced degree in field related to sustainability
  • Experience in the foodservice and/or disposable tableware market preferred
  • Experience communicating technical and complex topics in an easy to understand, compelling manner
  • A self starter with a proven ability to assemble action plans independently and execute them within a cross functional environment
  • Experience with products sold into foodservice wholesale and multi-channel retail a plus
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability to train teams, work with customers, and deliver public presentations

Mid-Atlantic Regional Sales Manager

The Regional Sales Manager would be responsible for growing product sales in the Mid-Atlantic Region, through distribution, broker management and strategic operator accounts, both contract management, Healthcare GPO and independent.  In addition to driving sales growth through broad line and specialty distribution, strong experience in specific foodservice segments is a preferred - e.g. Colleges & Universities (C&U), Quick Serve Restaurants (QSR), Business and Industry (B&I), Healthcare and Lodging.  The ability to influence, communicate effectively, and manage complexity is required.  Additionally, a passion and commitment to making a positive environmental and social change in the world is required.  Position reports to the SVP of Sales.
