Compostable Tableware Products

Sugarcane fiber(bagasse) and Bioplastics - plastics made from corn, potato or other annually renewable sources are the two main sources of biodegradable food service and packaging disposables. Fiber waste remaining after extraction of the juice from the sugarcane is molded at high pressure & temperature into plates, bowls, cups, take out containers, trays etc., while starch from corn, potato, tapioca, soybeans etc. is used to make products which are traditionally made from plastic and styrofoam such as disposable eating utensils, bags, cold cups, drinking straws, etc.

Sugarcane is not only a readily renewable resource, but the sugarcane fiber can be turned into products normally made from plastic or paper and avoids pollution from normal burning of sugarcane pulp after juice extraction. The sugarcane tableware has no plastic or wax lining applied to it and can be used for both hot and cold items and is a sustainable alternative to both plastic (non-biodegradable, petroleum derived, pollution causing) and paper tableware. Sugarcane products compost in 30-120 days in composting systems.

Bioplastics are a new generation of biodegradable & compostable plastics, derived from renewable raw materials such as starch (e.g. corn, potato, tapioca etc), cellulose, soy protein, lactic acid etc., not hazardous in production and decompose back to carbon dioxide, water, biomass etc. in the environment when discarded. Corn starch is currently the main raw material being used in the manufacture of bioplastic resins. Bioplastic products require composting for biodegradation and can take 3-24 months depending on the bio resin and thickness of the item.
